What’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is mine too.

When I look at world affairs beyond global trade and international politics, I look for societies move toward ultimate cooperation; the natural advancement of peace and happiness from the obvious conclusion that what is good for the whole also benefits the individual.

Regrettably, at least in the U.S., this is not our direction, evident by the way that we raise our children to WIN at all cost; to behave like some half-mad young executive climbing the corporate ladder, or the myriad corporations that sever company limbs to show stockholders profits, or the delusional certainty of our youth that it’s ‘my way or the highway’.

Many argue that if we hold ourselves above all others, as the most important person on the planet that we will naturally balance with others having the same mentality.

They assert that by being self centered we will protect ourselves and interact in a healthy way that is respectful of ‘Self’, that we should put our needs before anyone else’s and expect the same from others and this will somehow bring peace and harmony.

I hope as you read this, you found it as absurd as I did.

The more likely result of this interaction is the constant repositioning of relationships between winner and looser, or the abandonment of old ‘friends’ for temporary new ones whose desire for self gain has not yet clashed with our own.

Happily, there is always a ‘next generation’ looking back at our mistakes and blunders, rebelling against our concrete norms, keeping the pendulum from sitting still. With the next swing, I hope for the realization that we are all connected and everything that we do to hurt others ultimately hurts us.

With all of the economic uncertainty that we currently face, and the changes that we must endure to bring national communities together it’s obvious that cooperation and teamwork are necessary to our success.

Please, usher in the next generation.
