Critics of Buddhism – Part I

I came across this article quite by accident the other day:
Why I gave up on finding my religion.

I’ll grant that the article is quite old; 2003, like a million years ago..haha.
The reason I post it here is that you can find many articles on the internet which use similar reasoning to state why their author believes Buddhism fails. Interestingly, this article is very well written, and I feel that the author really believes what he wrote; all be it misguided.

In this series I will take parts of the article and breakdown where I believe the misunderstanding lies. I’m really not looking for controversy in this thread; I believe that these questions and concerns are valid, and that there needs to be a counter weight to these arguments; which might help to balance perspective with reality.

In the end, the authors’ opinions, or those of my own; for that matter, are irrelevant. Continued practice, and understanding through experience, is the only true measure of the Buddhist philosophy. I aim this series at those of us who are relatively new to Buddhism that might have questions as a result of reading this kind of reaction to Buddhism.

Part II to follow shortly,

Ambud
