There are prisoners that practice Buddhism who have more freedom than Bill does, since they understand the causes of suffering.

Missdharma,

I must say I found my way here quite by accident! I was simply looking for the Taoist parable of good or bad and found it on Ambud's blog. I am very intrigued with Buddhism and have gone to a class or two, but know nothing about it or your journey.

Something in your story struck a cord and I was disappointed for you that there were no replies posted. Thus, I just wanted to give you a word of encouragement and support from a fellow novice. Sticking with anything new is hard (no matter how good it may be for you) and congratulations on persevering!!

Ambud, I feel for you. I don't know what the situation is, but life throws things that may be good or bad at me all the time. A bad turns to good, a good to bad. The farmer's attitude is a good one. I hope you can think creatively and rightly to help yourself out in this rough time.

Peace!

We all understand that change is inevitable; this doesn’t seem to make it any easier.

No, that's true. Buddhism teaches a difficult path and I struggle mightily with it often. For me the game I play with my brain isn't chess but hide and seek, which usually finds me seeking. Striving. But I keep on keeping on and try to just do my best. I think we can be too hard on ourselves too sometimes when we expect ourselves to be like the Dalai Lama or something. I know I measure myself at times to the greats and find myself wanting but my karma is different than theirs and I must realize that they struggled (just as I do) for countless lives. I'm still in my infancy and they are doing post-grad work. So comparing myself to them isn't exactly fair to them or myself.

I like how honest you are in your posts. Keep on writing!!

Well said. I think there's room for both the traditional and the new. Being able to adapt to change is after all one of the bricks in the foundation of Buddhism.
